Biodiversity’s and Climate Change
Madagascar’s rich biodiversity is under threat due to rapid population growth, high pressure for land and natural resources while poor land management practices and fuelwood collection are permanently depleting the natural resource stocks and increasing the numbers of Malagasy in poverty.
Climate change impacts are predicted to increase in number and severity damaging both the country’s ecosystems, homes and infrastructures, particularly on the coastal areas.
Small-scale farmers are affected by the pattern of rainfall becoming more unpredictable with prolonged droughts in the south, resulting in frequent crop failures, extreme poverty and children malnutrition.
