Environmental Impacts
Key environmental impacts of Cactus farming are in erosion control, land reclamation, rehabilitation of arid soils and offering environmental services such as soil protection, climate regulation and “carbon sinks”, closing their stomata during the day to conserve water and at night opening it to absorb C02.
Opuntia are perfectly adapted to unpredictable rainfall to combat desertification and deforestation while preserving rural economic growth, protecting our heritage and improving the living conditions of local inhabitants.
Our social environment, defined as participative farming, is built on cultural acceptances, providing financial stability and demonstrating that human activities can be the heart of the strategy to efficiently fight against land degradation in the southern areas of Madagascar.
