Enhancement of Cactus

Orga Earth did a study on sustainable and responsible value chains using different parts of the cactus, such as the biomass and the seeds of the Prickly pear.

Clean biogas energy for cooking and a high quality cosmetic oil were the outcomes of this study which assess that Cactaceae Plants (CAM) have huge potentials as alternative renewable drought crops and as sustainable source of revenue for Africa’s farmers.

An evidence, the Opuntia’s Stricta & Dillenii, called “red fruits”, are considered as an invasive vegetable pest and are not used as a livelihood by the Southern population of the Island.

These two wild species are not eatable and have an acidic taste which is alo prone to resulting in stomach ache. The “red fruits” have a low nutritional value and a high seed content with great potential for oil.

Our primary concern for the well-being of the communities is to preserve and to enhance the existing natural resources by training and managing a responsible and renewable sourcing.

Our Mission is to turn an Invasive Pest into a Valuable Resource enhancing the Opportunity to Develop a Sustainable Green Economy using a Drought Resistant Crop
